Geffrye Museum

136 Kingsland Road
London
Greater London
E2 8EA

The Geffrye is one of London's most friendly and enjoyable museums. Its setting is in the former almshouses of the Ironmongers' Company, delightful 18th-century buildings with attractive gardens and mature trees.

The Geffrye Museum explores the home over the past 400 years, from around 1600 to the present day. Our focus is on the living rooms of the urban middle classes in England, particularly in London. We aim to show how such homes have been used and furnished over this period, reflecting changes in society and patterns of behaviour as well as style, fashion and taste.

The museum is situated just north of the City. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens including an award-winning walled herb garden and a series of historical garden rooms which highlight the key changes in urban middle-class gardens from the 17th century to the 20th century (open April - October).

The museum and gardens are regularly brought to life through an innovative programme of seminars, workshops, drama and music. Activities for families are particularly popular.

Special exhibitions are mounted throughout the year, exploring a wide variety of themes relating to the museum's displays. A traditional favourite is the Christmas Past exhibition each December, when the period rooms are festively decorated to reflect 400 years of Christmas Traditions in English homes.

Facilities include a seventy-seater restaurant serving contemporary and traditional English food, and an imaginative gift shop.
