Things to do in Palmers Green, Greater London
Palmers Green, while one of North London's lesser known suburbs, has a number of attractions to distract even the most jaded visitor.
At Palmers Green's heart stands the beautiful Broomfield Park. Spanning 500 acres and dating back to the mid-sixteenth century, the park was once a royal hunting ground. Nowadays, the series of playing fields, wooded areas, more formal gardens, lakes and ponds frequently used by model boat enthusiasts, along with the crazy golf course make it a firm favourite for all ages. Sadly, the fine Broomfield Hall at the centre of the park still awaits restoration after being ravaged by fire over 20 years ago.
In recent years Palmers Green's long high street, Green Lanes, hit the silver screen as the backdrop to Harry Potter's Knight Bus ride in The Prisoner of Azkaban, providing a contemporary link to the town's literary past; Stevie Smith, poet and novelist lived in the town for over 60 years.
For today's visitor, Green Lanes is more likely to form the starting point for shopping and dining in the town. As Palmers Green reputedly has the largest Cypriot population outside of Cyprus, you can expect a fine choice of restaurants and delicatessens. But that's not to say other cuisines are left out; there's an award-winning French bistro and superb Italian, Indian and Chinese fayre too.
When it comes to shopping, while many high street favourites can be found, it's worth hunting out the more interesting interior design and fashion boutiques which jostle alongside second-hand book and record shops.
