Moseley Old Hall - A National Trust Property |
This atmospheric, Elizabethan farmhouse has amazing stories to tell about what life was like in the 17th century. The most famous story of all is about King Charles II who hid here to escape from Oliver Cromwell's troops in 1651. At the hall are hidden priests holes, in one of which the royal fugitive hid. The bed on which the young king slept is also on view. You can experience the bedroom King Charles II slept in by candlelight and see how a 17th century family would have eaten at the hall table which is laid out for dinner.
Follow the story of the King's dramatic escape and find out about 17th century domestic life at one of England's finest historic homes.
The walled garden has varieties of plants and orchard fruit trees that are from the 17th century and has a striking knot garden following a 17th century design. In 2010, a new beehive was introduced which produces honey.
The hall has a very popular tearoom serving freshly made light lunches and delicious homemade cakes. There's also a National Trust shop with a wide selection of gifts.
There's a quiz for children to do around the hall and garden. Also, from 2010, there are children's tracker packs to explore the property.
There's a year long programme of fun events for all the family (please check the National Trust website or local media for details). Many of the events have fun things for children to do. The hall has regular demonstrations of 17th century domestic life by costumed demonstrators.
