West Tilbury was the site chosen for the Camp Royal in 1588 to prepare for the threatened Spanish invasion. Queen Elizabeth I visited the army at the site and gave her famous speech 'I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and a king of England too'
