Things to do in Heywood, Greater Manchester
The town of Heywood, three miles west of Rochdale, has its origins in the 13th century, but the area owes much of its charm and character to Robert Peel, (the father of Sir Robert Peel, originator of Britain's first police force), who created the textile town virtually from a greenfield site.
St Luke's Church graces the town's centre and it's recently remodelled Civic Concourse, adjoining the Civic Centre. You can relive those childhood memories and the fun of model collecting by visiting the Corgi Heritage Centre in Heywood, where you can discover the fascinating history of Corgi die cast model vehicles that made Corgi a world wide name.
You will find an interesting range of shops and cafes as well as a thriving indoor market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Heywood has a Sports Complex with a multi purpose sports hall and two swimming pools.
On the doorstep is Queen's Park, one of the Borough's finest Victorian parks - and a visit to Heywood can be combined with a walk in some of the area's most picturesque countryside, including steep wooded valleys and moorland areas of Ashworth Valley and Carr Wood.
An exciting new development is the opening of a new station in Heywood for the east Lancs Railway, linking the town to Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall with regular railway trips.
