Things to do in Glenfield, Leicestershire |
Glenfield has a prominent place in railway history, with the opening of the Swannington Leicester line, the first railway line south of Manchester.
A major engineering feature of the line was the 1,796-yard long Glenfield tunnel, the longest of its kind in many years.Built by Robert Stephenson son of the famous George Stephenson, the line carried passengers until 1928.The tunnel is now closed but a memorial remains in the form of a housing development called Stephenson's Court on Station Road.
