Newly refurbished and extended, the displays and exhibitions have something for everyone to enjoy. Main galleries include Costume and Motor Racing heritage as well as local archaeology and history, dinosaurs and fossils, natural history and geology, social history and cultures of other lands, local arts and crafts. Interactive displays and Access Centre for research.
Discover the hidden history of Bexhill from earliest days to medieval village, smuggling, Napoleonic barrack town, Victorian/Edwardian resort and the birthplace of British motor racing in 1902.
Key exhibits include the original architect's model of the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill built Elva sports racing car, a replica Serpollet steam car of 1902, a giant crab from Japan and an Edwardian Collectors Study room setting. Many activities and events are held throughout the year for both young and old alike.
Facilities now include three large galleries, lift, toilets (inc disabled), shop area and refreshments. Education room available for group bookings.
The Museum is ideally situated. A seafront stroll to the Clocktower leads you there. Stay for however long you wish. Children are fascinated by the dinosaurs and the giant crab and they can express their talents for drawing or answering quizzes at an activity table while parents browse. When you have had your fill Egerton Park abounds with flowers and shrubs all the year round. The tennis courts, lake and children's play area supply other forms of entertainment. The Park's north-east gate leads to antique shops before returning to Sackville Road.
Collections Access Centre allows all visitors to find out more about the museum's collections, displays, local history and archaeology. Easy to use touch screen computers give access to photographs, documents, paintings,videos and oral history. An exhibition which traces childhood from prehistory through to the present day and toys through the ages exploring themes that continue through time as well as how the concept of childhood has changed. A programme of events on and off site will also accompany the exhibition - see separate leaflets, website or telephone for full details.
