North Yorkshire

Horton in Ribblesdale is a small village whose only claim to fame is as a base for climbing Pen-y-Ghent, one of Yorkshire's Three Peaks (the others are Ingleborough and Whernside).

The mountain towers over the village, which has pubs and a café to refresh returning walkers. It is on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, which traverses the pennines, crossing a dramatic viaduct at nearby Ribblehead. The limestone country around here is popular for caving and potholing.
