Craig-y-nos Country Park
The Craig-y-nos Country Park offers over 40 acres of countryside to enjoy in this beautiful part of the upper Tawe Valley. The first estate to be developed here belonged to a local man - Rhys Davies Powell. He used grey limestone to build a home known as Bryn Melin about 160 years ago. Before that farmers used the land for grazing.
Adelina Patti, world famous opera singer, moved here in 1878 and she used pink sandstone to extend the house. She lived here for over 40 years with her second and third husbands. It was the ideal place to escape from the busy travelling season of an opera star. Patti employed landscape gardeners to create her own private pleasure grounds. As you walk around the grounds today you can still see the results of all that work.
After Patti's death in 1919 the house became a hospital and patients used the grounds for relaxation. The hospital closed in the 1980's and the house went on to have a number of different owners. In 1976 the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority turned the grounds into a country park, for the benefit of locals and visitors alike.
The Changing Seasons Tea Rooms and Restaurant in the former Visitor Centre are open every day, serving quality, local seasonal food and drink. Restaurant will be available on Friday and Saturday evenings. Sunday lunches bookable in advance.
