Pontnewynydd Tourist Information |
|
The Reverend Edmund Jones with his wife Mary came to live in Pontnewynydd from Penmaen and in 1740 he founded Ebenezer Chapel. He was an avid reader and although poor, had collected a small library. To enable the Chapel to be completed he sold some of his books to fund it. Thought to be an eccentric, Reverend Jones became known as the Prophet of the Tranch. At that time Pontnewynydd was mainly Welsh speaking. He wrote many books and was very well known and liked. Stories of his life make very interesting reading. He was friendy with Lady Huntington, who gave him a Communion Set for use in Ebenezer Chapel and this is still one of its prized possessions. Edmund Jones was a fascinating person and much has been written about him. Ebenezer Chapel is still going with a small but very happy friendly congregation, who give a very warm welcome to everyone.
