Visit Orchard Side, home of the 18th Century Poet, Translator and Letter-writer William Cowper. See displays of his works, portraits and memorabilia, plus those of his friend John Newton. Between them they wrote the Olney hymns - including 'Amazing Grace'.
Explore the 18th century flower garden and Victorian kitchen garden, and the original summer house where William wrote many poems and letters.' John Newton, seaman and slavetrader, was converted to Christianity in a great storm. After leaving Olney for London in 1780 he became spiritual mentor to William Wilberforce and a leading campaigner against the slave trade, which was abolished in 1807, the year of his death.' Discover many items of Olney's past - from Glacial Erratics, Dinosaur Bones, Roman Coins and Civil War Relics to Bobbin Lace and Shoe Manufacture. Come and browse in the museum's shop, where a wide variety of goods is available. There is ample free car parking space close to the Museum. Coach parties and school visits welcome by prior arrangement with the custodian. The ground floor and gardens are wheelchair accessible; for visitors unable to manage the stairs to the upper floors,the museum website provides detailed illustrations and descriptions of key objects from the collections.
