Visit Orchard Side, home of the 18th Century Poet, Translator and Letter-writer William Cowper. See displays of his works, portraits and memorabilia, plus those of his friend John Newton. Between them they wrote the Olney hymns - including 'Amazing Grace'. William spent many happy hours in his summer house where he wrote several of his poems. He was also a keen gardener, who experimented with plants new to 18th century England.
John Newton, seaman and slavetrader, was converted to Christianity in a great storm. He came to Olney as a curate in 1764. Besides assisting in the fight against slavery, he wrote many great hymns, including "Amazing Grace" with his friend William Cowper.
Discover many items of Olney's past - from Glacial Erratics, Dinosaur Bones, Roman Coins and Civil War Relics to Bobbin Lace and Shoe Manufacture. Come and browse in the museum's shop, where a wide variety of goods is available. There is ample free car parking space close to the Museum.
Coach parties and school visits welcome by prior arrangement with the custodian. Disabled persons are very welcome, a portfolio of photographs of exhibits in the upper rooms is available for those who find the stairs difficult to manage.
