Museum of East Asian Art

The Museum and Its Collection

The Museum of East Asian Art was founded in 1993 as the result of the vision of Brian McElney OBE, a retired solicitor who practised in Hong Kong for over 35 years. Pieces collected by Mr McElney formed the basis of the collection and today visitors will find ceramics from all the countries of East Asia, bamboo carvings and one of the most comprehensive Chinese jade collections in the UK. There are also fine examples of metalware and other decorative arts.

Exhibitions, Events & Education

The Museum offers access to an excellent and wide ranging collection, which has been interpreted in a lively and innovative manner. It is a resource for scholars, school children and the many leisure visitors to the City of Bath. Particular attention is given to the Museum's educational role with special exhibitions, an active events programme and new publications designed to encourage a greater understanding of East Asian art and culture.

The Museum also presents a series of special exhibitions. These change every few months and typically focus in more depth on a particular aspect of East Asian art and culture; often featuring photography as well as art objects.
