House of Dun

This beautiful Georgian house, overlooking the Montrose Basin Nature Reserve, was designed by William Adam and completed in 1730 for David Erskine, the 13th Laird of Dun.

Grand public rooms with elaborate plasterwork by Joseph Enzer sit alongside family apartments. The house contains collections of 18th and 19th century furniture, porcelain and portraits.

The most famous lady of the house - Lady Augusta FitzClarence, the daughter of William IV and the actress Mrs Dorothy Jordan lived here and collected the many royal mementoes now on display. You can see many examples of Lady Augusta's exquisite woolwork and embroidery.

Be entertained by the model theatre display, with its scaled-down stage and cast of miniature costumed characters.

Visit the Courtyard buildings, where you will find a handloom weaving workshop, a gamekeeper's shed, gardeners' bothy and a rat-proof game parlour.

The house sits in its own formal gardens with parkland and woodland beyond. You're free to explore and enjoy the Victorian walled garden and wooded den, before venturing further afield to the Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve.

The Trust owns much of the western half of the Nature Reserve and it is internationally important for its migratory wading birds and wildfowl. Down at the River South Esk there are salmon and sea trout, the salmon fishing season is 16th February to 31st October.
