Guildford House is a fascinating 17th century town house, now Guildford Borough Council's art gallery showing selections from the Borough's Collection and varied temporary exhibitions.
The House was built in 1660 for John Child, who was three times Mayor of Guildford. It was the residence of the Martyr family for a century from 1736 and from the mid
1840's became business premises. It opened as Guildford's art gallery in 1959. The House has a magnificent plaster ceiling in the Powell Room and original panelling and period furniture in other rooms. The ornately carved oak and elm staircase rises through the house reflecting the Restoration period in the urns of fruit and flowers and the flowing
acanthus leaves in the panels.
The Collection
The Borough's Collection contains many fine pastel portraits by Guildford born artist John Russell R.A. (1745-1806). He portrayed with equal skill adults and children from many sectors of the community. There are many
paintings, drawings and prints of Guildford and the surrounding area in the Collection, including major 19th century paintings by Henry Pether and Henry Prosser. Local 20th century artists are also well represented including Henry J Sage, Edward Wesson and Ronald Smoothey. The contemporary craft collection includes ceramics, textiles, embroidery and glass.Works from the Borough Collection are displayed regularly and alternated with various temporary exhibitions, including frequent displays of costumes and accessories from the 19th and 20th centuries.
