The Creetown Gemrock Museum houses one of the finest privately owned collections of gemstones, crystals, minerals, gemstone objet d'art and fossils in Britain. Owned and run by the Stephenson family, the Museum has in the last few years, undergone a major and exciting re-development and refurbishment programme.
The basic theme of the Museum is designed to stimulate interest and wonder in the fascinating subjects of gems, crystals and mineralogy. To achieve this, we have assembled, what we believe is, a truly astonishing display of natural mineral forms in every conceivable shape, colour and size. Visitors to the Museum are introduced to this captivating world and a 15 minute audio visual programme 'Fire in the Stones'.
Our showroom galleries extend over 3000 sq.ft and in them, we have illustrated the incredible beauty of the natural world. Almost every known gemstone and mineral is represented including huge specimens from the quartz and fluorite crystal groups, exquisite geodes lined with amethyst, agates with spectacular colour bands, opals and even diamonds. There is also a fossilised dinosaur egg and dung, and meteorites from outer space.
The 'working' minerals, known and used by mankind for centuries are displayed in magnificent specimens and include the copper group - malachite, azurite and cupric, the red ores of kidney - like haematite, magnetites, asbestos, ironstone, tin and lead as well as many more exotic minerals.
In 1992, our tenth anniversary year, we used our experience and the latest 'state of the art' techniques to create a dazzling new crystal cave. Your visit will be truly crowned at the sight of the secret treasures displayed in all their magnificence in hidden crevices and crystal lodes. Your breath will be taken away as our unique ultra-violet centrepiece display radiates its colours in fluorescent light.
Beautiful as nature's creations are, man has, over the centuries, worked these gemstones and minerals into unique artistic forms and the collection contains many fine examples of the lapidary's art - faceted stones, cabochon cut stones and carvings. The patient, delicate skills of these craftsmen down the ages will be marvelled at.
Also on the site are The Gemrock Gift Shop, The Lapidary Workshop and The Prospector's Pantry Tea-room.
The Museum is family and wheelchair friendly.
