Broughton House |
An 18th-century house of the Murrays of Broughton and Cally, which was bought by E A Hornel, the renowned artist and member of the 'The Glasgow Boys'. Exotic Japan had a strong attraction for him, he lived there twice and his experiences there influenced many of his late paintings, some of which hang in the impressive gallery he created at Broughton House.
Hornel was a great collector and the library he built up here still contains an extensive collection of Scottish books with an emphasis on Dumfries & Galloway and in particular Robert Burns. Behind the house, Hornel created a delightful Japanese-style garden, which promises a visit of delightful discovery.
