Stanhope Tourist Information |
|
The historic market town of Stanhope with its cobbled Market Place, stands on the banks of the river Wear and has a strong industrial heritage, which stems from mining lead and quarrying limestone for iron and steel making. The Durham Dales centre in the Castle gardens is a showcase for local crafts. The Dale's Christian heritage is reflected in Stanhope especially in its 12th century church of St. Thomas, (the little 'cathedral of the dale') and railway enthusiasts can visit The Station, home of the Weardale Railway Trust.
