Chertsey Tourist Information |
|
Chertsey is situated midway between Egham and Weybridge, the town has a long and distinguished history and was once the site of a Benedictine Abbey, first established in AD666. In medieval times this important abbey was famous for the production of fine, decorated floor tiles some of which can be seen in the Chertsey Museum. There are a number of handsome 18th century houses in the town and the parish church of St. Perer's has an attractive medieval tower and chancel arch. The seven-arched bridge over the Thames is the centre of much riverside activity with pubs, boatbuilding yards and much river traffic. The town is rich in open spaces; Chertsey Meads offer 170 acres of riverside land and a habitat for a wide variety of birds and wild life. Just outside Chertsey is St. Anns Hill, a 57-acre wooded park with magnificent views from the top and the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, as well as a cottage which is reputed to be haunted.
