Spitalfields City Farm began in 1978 as an allotment scheme on derelict land. It has since developed into an urban farm which aims to bring the countryside and rural activities to the East End. Tucked away behind Allen Gardens and covering around one and a half acres, the farm is a tranquil oasis on the very edge of the City of London.
Animals
We keep a range of animals, some of which are rare breeds, including a cow, pig, sheep, goats, pony, donkey, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchilla, friendly ferrets and farmyard cats. Each spring you will be able to see lambs, goat kids, a calf, chicks and ducklings.
Horticulture
Although the animals will always be the main attraction at the farm, our developing horticultural project is flourishing , with space for growing outside a wildlife garden and a pond. Our plants are grown in the best home made compost in the East End! Running alongside the general horticulture project is the 'Coriander Club', a group of local women who grow their own vegetables, learn basic English as a second language and computer skills with our support worker.
Education Programme
The farm's education programme is an exciting learning experience, linking farm resources with subjects across the curriculum. We offer a range of structured activities or informal sessions designed around individual group requirements.Activities include:
