Castle House and its Collection is a fitting memorial to Sir Alfred Munnings, KCVO, PRA, who lived at Castle House from 1919 until his death in 1959. Sir Alfred lived and worked in the unique setting of Castle House for over 40 years, calling it 'the house of my dreams'.
Famous for his racehorse and equestrian paintings, many consider his best pictures were prior to this period, when between 1898 and 1920 he recorded English, and in particular East Anglian,
rural life.
The Museum prides itself in the diversity of paintings and sculptures on view - so why not come and make up your own mind.
Castle House, a mixture of Tudor and Georgian periods, has been restored structurally. The essential character of the house as lived in by Sir Alfred and Lady Violet has been retained by using Munnings' original furniture. The House stands in spacious grounds with well maintained gardens which visitors are welcome to walk round. They may
also view his original studios where he painted some of his most famous paintings and where many of his original working materials are displayed.
A considerable number of pictures have been purchased by the Trust in order to make the Collection representative of Munnings' life span of work. Pictures are borrowed each season from other Museum and private collections to ensure to ensure that each year there is something new to see.
