Lullingstone Castle and the World Garden |
Lullingstone Castle - Historic Family Mansion, Church and home to the World Garden. Frequented by Henry VIII and Queen Anne.
The house contains fine state rooms, portraits and armour. The Tudor Gatehouse was one of the earliest in England to be built entirely of bricks.
St Botolph's Parish Church in the grounds is of Norman origin and contains some of the oldest stained glass windows in England together with a fine Tudor rood-screen and family monuments.
In the beautiful grounds is the amazing World Garden of Plants created in 2005 containing nearly 8,000 plant species, hybrids and cultivars in a walled garden of just 2 acres. This amazing project the brainchild of Tom Hart Dyke was conceived by Tom when being held hostage by kidnappers in the Colombian jungle whilst on a plant hunting expedition.
Laid out as continents of the World, plants are displayed in their respective country of origin. In the summer of 2009 Lullingstone Castle was officially designated as the National Collection of Eucalyptus and opening in the same year was the Cloud Garden featuring plants from temperate localities which are too frost sensitive to survive in the World Garden.
Visitors strolling arounbd the World Garden will encounter Dahlias in Mexico, Olives in the Mediterranean, Red Hot Pokers in South Africa and Eucalypts in Australia.
A number of special garden events are staged each year.
