Discovery is the North East of England's most popular free tourist attraction. Walk through its doors to discover all about life in Newcastle and Tyneside. From the area's renowned maritime history and world-changing science and technology right through to fashion through the eras and military history, the Discovery Museum has something for everyone.
The museum is bursting with hands-on interactives, which makes it the perfect place to learn through play.
The museum attracted an astonishing 467,000 visits last year and many of these people return on a regular basis to uncover something new. Our displays are regularly updated and complemented by an array of free, fun learning activities.
Everyone's favourite exhibit - Turbinia - dominates the entrance to the museum. Invented on Tyneside, it is the first ship to be powered by a steam turbine. The 35 metre vessel was once the fastest ship in the world and her history is brought to life in the new Turbinia Story gallery. She sets the standard for a day out that is guaranteed to be filled with breathtaking discoveries.

By Public Transport: Discovery Museum is only a five minute walk from Newcastle Central Station Metro, the mainline rail station and local bus services. The museum is well signposted from the station. For more information on public transport telephone the NEXUS traveline on 0870 608 2 608 or visit: http://www.tyneandwearmetro.co.uk/index.htm By Car: Discovery is based on Blandford Square in Newcastle upon Tyne. The museum can be found just off the A6082 from Redheugh Bridge heading onto St James' Boulevard or from the A186 from Westmorland Road heading onto St James' Boulevard. Parking is available outside the museum, but it is extremely limited and gets very busy. We would recommend travelling by public transport or parking at the Times Square car park behind Life Science Centre, which is a five minute walk from the museum. |
