Set in Gloucester's Historic docks the National Waterways Museum unveils the mystery and history behind the 200 year old tale of inland waterways and fortunes lost and gained. Enter through a lock chamber, with its running water and explore the hands on displays, working engines, archive film and interactives. There's plenty to discover from Historic boats and the floating barge collection, to the sights and smells of the Blacksmith's workshop. Adjoining the interactive area is a traditional forge - often with
a Blacksmith in residence.Accessibility
The collection is accessible in many different forms, through computer generated interactives, by text and images and with a large part of the display being "hands-on". An important feature of the latest development will be a loop system for visitors with a hearing impairment. Access to the second and third floor of the galleries is via a lift and different levels within these galleries are ramped. The only limitations on site are the floating historic craft, visitors with limited
mobility may find access to the narrowboats and dredger difficult. Moored alongside the Museum's wide quayside the boats can be easily viewed. Adjoining the interactive area is a traditional forge - often with a Blacksmith in residence. If this area is of particular interest for you it would be as well to telephone the Museum to see if the Blacksmith will be on site when you visit. The Museum has a wheelchair which is available for visitors to use. A well stocked book/gift shop is 
situated on the ground floor. Toilets with easy access are available on the ground floor and also on level 3.Educational Visits
Education staff at the Museum are well trained in organising and helping to plan visits to suit schools' individual needs. General visits to the Museum can be linked to many curriculum subjects and topics. Workshops are available with opportunities for boat related crafts. For further information contact the education officer.There are daily 45-minute trips aboard Queen Boadicea ll departing from Merchants Quay.
