The Museum of Fulham Palace tells the story of Fulham Palace, the oldest and most important building in Hammersmith and Fulham, formerly the country home of the Bishops of London. An amazing survival, the building sits in a historic garden, and is a fascinating mixture of architectural styles from Tudor to Victorian.
The Museum reopened in April 2007 with new displays. Fulham Palace itself underwent a major restoration project from 2005 to 2006 and recently won the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors building conservation award for London.Vistors can now see all the major historic rooms on the ground floor; including the Great Hall, Chapel and Bishop Sherlock's Room. There is also a cafe open seven days a week and a gallery of contemporary art.
Tours of the Palace and gardens take place three times a month, every second and fourth Sunday and third Tuesdays, all at 2pm. Tours cost £5 and no booking is necessary. All tours start from the Tudor courtyard. Garden walks also take place. Please see website for details. The Bishop's Tree, sculpted by Andrew Frost is a new attraction in the grounds. The summer exhibition "The Great White City: The Franco-British Exhibition & the 1908 Olympics" runs from 19 July to 21 September during Museum opening hours. Admission free.
