Discover the history and traditions of a unique part of Britain at this award - winning Museum. Set in a beautiful site next to the River Medway, the buildings, exhibitions, crafts and farmland preserve a living experience of a countryside rich in history.

In the summer months the Kentish Lady river boat travels the Medway for the half hour journey from Maidstone to the Museum of Kent Life.

  • See Britain's last traditional working Oast House and hand-harvested hop garden
  • Glimpse an historic way of life, from hop picking to farming
  • Enjoy fascinating exhibitions devoted to "Living in Kent in 1900", "Farming in the Fifties" and "Uncovering Kent"
  • Join in the fun of special events staged throughout the year
  • Meet the animals in our livestock centre and birds in our aviary
  • Wander round our kitchen garden, orchard and herb garden
  • Visit the 19th century granary, traditional wagon store, forge, rare Shepherd's Hut and unique Hop pickers' huts
  • Let the children explore our venture playground and drive our mini-tractors
  • Taste home-made produce in our licensed Kentish tearoom. Relax in the Beer Garden, Tea Garden or Picnic Site.
  • Take a "Walk Down the Medway" - our open air exhibition and enjoy the riverside
  • Tour Petts Farmhouse - a late 18th century farmhouse.

    Directions
    By Road:
    The Museum is located in the heart of Kent, 5 minutes from Maidstone, 35 minutes from Canterbury, one hour from London, 30 minutes from the Channel Tunnel and ports, 20 minutes from the M25 and 3 minutes from junction 6 of the M20. The Museum is just off the A229 Maidstone-Chatham road following signs for Aylesford once off the motorway.

    By Rail
    Frequent, direct train service from London Victoria and Charing Cross (60 minutes) or stations in Kent to Maidstone East or West stations with taxi, bus or riverboat service from Maidstone to Museum.

    By Boat:
    In the summer months the Kentish Lady river boat travels the Medway for the half hour journey from Maidstone to the Museum. A unique and relaxing way to visit the Museum and Maidstone, or simply enjoy a boat trip before or after touring the Museum.
