Bourton House Gardens |

Bourton House Gardens first opened to the public on a single Sunday in 1987 under the auspices of the National Garden Scheme. This was an exciting time. For many years the work involved a brown earth policy (lots of digging and not too much planting), growing organically in every sense of the word. Each season
brought new challenges, as well as new plans for new projects.
The same is true today, the garden is ever evolving: whether it is the installation of a new tunnel in the field opposite to allow even more exotica to grow, or widening wide beds to accommodate more exciting foliage and flora.
Since Saxon times, the stone built village of
Bourton on the Hill has hugged the Cotswold escarpment. Built on monastic lands, Bourton House, its Brewhouse stables and coach house have created a courtyard since the late 16th century.
The Tithe Barn preserves the dedication stone of 1570 with the initials RP for the then owner Richard Palmer. It has been classified as a grade
1 building. The gallery of Contemporary Art, Craft and Design is housed in the Tithe barn.
There are 10 acres of garden, 3 acres immediately surrounding Bourton House including the ornamental garden, kitchen garden and the orchard. A seven acre walled pasture is now given over to specimen trees and sculpture.
