Sandwich Tourist Information |
|
Sandwich is one of the most complete medieval towns in England, it has great charm and character, with its network of narrow streets and alleys; it is one of the five ancient Cinque Ports established by Royal Charter in 1155. Some sections of the medieval town walls and ramparts remain with 'The Butts' providing a perfect elevated walking route. Sandwich provides ready access to the wonderfully preserved Henry VIII artillery castles of Deal and Walmer It has the highest density of listed buildings of any town in England. You can still see today, the remains of the triumphal arch, built to mark the Roman landing in AD43 at Richborough Roman Fort. Today Sandwich is well known for its Championship golf courses.
