Purfleet features in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in which the famous vampire buys a house called 'Carfax' and lives in Purfleet. In the 1880's and 1890's the Royal Hotel, by the Thames, was known as Wingrove's Hotel and was allegedly visited by Edward VII when Prince of Wales.
