Newport (Telford) Tourist Information

One of the most unspoiled market towns in the district, Newport has a fascinating history as a twelfth century planned town, which was largely rebuilt in the 17th century after a great fire in 1665. One of the few buildings to survive the fire was the Guildhall of 1615, which now houses the Town council.

Newport retains its links with its agricultural hinterland through its weekly livestock and retail markets. The town also has historical links with Thomas Telford, who designed the Newport branch canal, which was opened in 1835. While no longer operational, a length of the canal remains, and provides an attractive feature close to the centre of Newport.
