Contributing a Town Description Guidelines, Terms and Conditions |
It would be great if you would contribute a description of a town you know to AboutBritain.com. Thousands of potential visitors read this site every day, so your description would be read and enjoyed by a lot of people!
Guidelines
Here are some guidelines to help you:
- Original: Your description must be your own original work - not copied from anywhere else. We can only publish original articles that you have written yourself.
- Substantial: Town descriptions must be a minimum of 150 words. Ideally they should be between 250 and 750 words.
- Relevant to Visitors: Town descriptions should be written for potential visitors to the town. They might be tourists on holiday, people visiting friends or relatives in the area, or people visiting on business. Which points of interest can they see in the town while they're there?
- Accurate: It goes without saying that we only want to publish accurate information, so please make sure your descriptions are correct and up to date.
- Positive: Try to be positive, and highlight the good things about the town you're describing. Of course we don't want you to mislead people - but visitors to the town will be interested in seeing the highlights - so talk mainly about those. There are plenty of other sites on the web that are negative about everything, let's not join them!
- Timeless: Although we regularly review descriptions to make sure they're up to date - with thousands of towns on the site, this is a mammoth task. You can help by trying to write descriptions that won't date quickly. Descriptions of history, landmarks, and major points of interest are unlikely to go out of date quickly. But if you talk about specific shops, or describe something as "new this year" for example, then your article will go out of date very fast. We understand that everything changes - but please try to write in as "timeless" a way as possible.
- Non Promotional: We hope you're going to write a description to entertain and inform potential visitors to the town - not to promote your own business or agenda.
- No Links or Personal Information: Do not include links, email addresses or telephone numbers of businesses or individuals (including yourself) - if you do, these will be removed by our editors before publication.
- Example: This is a great example of the sort of style and content that we're looking for. This is also excellent - though don't feel you have to write as much as this if you don't want to!
