Bishop's Castle Tourist Information |
|
On the edge of the Clun Forest, is the ancient market town of Bishop's Castle, the town retains its medieval outline and has a long and fascinating history. Guided tours are available through the old thoroughfare, from the Parish church to the site of the Norman castle built by the Bishops of Hereford. You'll hear the stories that lie behind the various buildings, many dating from the early 16th century. Visit the House on Crutches Museum and the Railway and Transport Museum to find out about the town's heyday when it was a railway town with a curious single line. In Bishop's Castle you will find plenty of shops, including interesting antique, craft and clothes shops. Lots of places serving excellent food and six pubs, two of which brew their own ale. Take time to explore the spectacular natural beauty of the hills of south-west Shropshire, and the magnificent countryside around Offa's Dyke, and the even older Bury Ditches, one of the finest hill-forts in England.
