Wem Tourist Information |
|
The small market town of Wem, is famous for being the birthplace of the modern Sweet Pea. Visitors come from far and wide, to attend the annual show held in July. Wem was the home of the infamous Judge Jeffreys, Baron of Wem. He lived at Lowe Hall, which has retained its original Jacobean interior. Although Wem dates from Saxon times it was almost destroyed by fire in 1667, and has few buildings earlier than that date. However a few interesting buildings remain, such as the 14th century tower of the parish church and The Old Hall. Wem was the boyhood home of the essayist William Hazlitt, and you can still see his little white house in Noble Street.
