Newbiggin by the Sea Tourist Information |
|
Newbiggin By The Sea is an attractive seaside town which, over the centuries, has made good use of its links with the sea. At one time the town was third only in importance to London and Hull for the shipping of corn, and it still maintains a small fleet of the traditional Northumbrian fishing cobles. Cod caught by these boats can be enjoyed at restaurants in the town. There is a long and proud association with the RNLI. The Lifeboat Station was first established in 1851 following a fishing disaster, and the boathouse itself is the oldest in operation in the country. Newbiggin By The Sea has been popular as a holiday destination since the early twentieth century. Visitors today can still enjoy a traditional treat of home made ice cream, served at the Rivera Café in the Piazza. A visit to the Cafe is worthwhile to see the original 1930's Art Deco Shop. A range of sports facilities are available at Newbiggin Sports centre.
