Liverpool Tourist Information

Liverpool the world famous city, is a visually stunning, friendly place. It has a compact central area and good transport links to the rest of the region, giving easy access to all areas. Whether you are fanatical about sport, a culture vulture, enjoy exploring heritage sites or are a music lover, Liverpool has got plenty to keep you entertained. The city has become the nightlife capital of the north of England, and offers a wide range of venues from intimate café bars to traditional pubs.

When King John signed Liverpool's charter in 1207 he created a 13th century new town. Liverpool began as a fishing town, but developed into one of the world's most important trading centres. It reached the height of its importance and prosperity in the 18th century. Liverpool has produced many famous authors, playwrights, poets and musicians; perhaps the best known of all is The Beatles.

The famous Albert Dock - a 19th century warehouse, an award winning attraction, housing café bars, restaurants and shops. It is home to the Beatles Shop, where you can buy Beatles memorabilia and souvenirs while enjoying the Beatles hits being played on an original 60's jukebox. Don't miss the Beatles Story - An evocative exhibition charting the lives and times of John, Paul, George and Ringo. While you are at the Albert Dock visit HM Customs and Excise Museum, there is an interactive hands-on display exploring the fascinating work of customs officers. The Merseyside Maritime Museum has four floors dedicated to emigration, cargo handling, art and the sea. Also housed here is the Tate Gallery Liverpool, home of the national collection of modern art, the largest gallery of contemporary art outside London. Hope on the Waterfront at Britannia Pavilion, Albert Dock, is a Cyber café and video wall allowing visitors to experience the latest interactive technology.

Liverpool boasts no fewer than 1,500 listed buildings, a veritable feast for those interested in architecture. Among some of the finest is the Royal Liver building, Liverpool's best known landmark; note the clock which is the biggest in Britain, beating Big Ben in width by 2feet 6inches. Liverpool Town Hall is a Grade one listed building with fine state rooms, crystal chandeliers and priceless paintings. Metropolitan Cathedral, is the Roman Catholic Cathedral with impressive interior lantern tower of multi-coloured glass. Liverpool Cathedral is the largest Anglican Cathedral in Britain. There are breathtaking views from the top of the 331 foot tower.

Renowned for its sporting successes and top class events, Liverpool is home of the world famous racecourse Aintree - where you can see the new attraction Grand National Experience. Golfers are spoiled for choice with more golf courses in the area than any other county. The coastal location is a perfect place for Water sports enthusiasts. Football fans can see matches played by Liverpool's two famous teams, Everton, and Liverpool. Awesome Walls Climbing Centre is one of the largest indoor climbing centres in Europe, and there is a choice of excellent Leisure Centres.

No visit to the area would be complete without a trip on the most famous ferry in the world. You'll never really know Merseyside until you've experienced it from the deck of the famous Mersey Ferry.
