Launceston Tourist Information |
|
Launceston was the capital of Cornwall until 1838. Situated in the north east of the county, built on a hill and dominated by the ruins of a Norman keep. This is thought to have been the inspiration for Chateau Terrible, in Malory's Morte d' Arthur. Launceston Castle - Set high on a motte, the castle commanded the town, surrounding countryside and main routes into Cornwall. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is unique for the exquisite carvings, which completely cover the outside walls. Launceston Steam Railway - This Steam Railway uses locomotives, the newest of which is over 100 years old! You can choose to travel in open or closed carriages on 5-mile round trip from historic Launceston to Newmills. There are shops, cafes, museum and children's play area. Nearby are Tamar Otter Park and Trethorne Leisure Farm.
