Lancaster Tourist Information

The Historic city of Lancaster - Originally a Roman settlement, Lun-Castrum the fort on the River Lune. For centuries, travellers approaching Lancaster have been greeted with the magnificent sight of the Medieval Castle, which presides over the city's compact, historic heart. In addition to guided tours of the Castle, there are two museums - the Georgian Old Town Hall in Market Square is now the City Museum and the Maritime Museum is on the quayside.

The Judges Lodgings, reputedly the City's oldest town house opens its doors to visitors and the Priory Church on Castle Hill and St. Peter's Cathedral in East Road both extend a warm welcome. The eastern skyline is dominated by the Ashton Memorial, set in the beautiful Williamson Park, with the added attractions of a Butterfly House, tropical birds and 'mini beasts'.

Shopping in Lancaster's traffic free centre is so easy and relaxing, with attractive shopping centres and the new market hall offering traditional fayre in comfortable modern surroundings. The 'Assembly Rooms', situated opposite, is home to stalls selling curios and collectibles and in the nearby streets and alleyways can be found a wealth of individual shops, pubs and cafes.
