Canterbury Tourist Information

This beautiful city with cobbled lanes and streets, is the seat of the Anglican Communion and Kent's premier tourist destination. Canterbury is dominated by the impressive Norman Cathedral, where in 1170 Thomas Beckett was murdered - turning Canterbury into a place of pilgrimage.

The never-ending stream of visitors inspired Geoffrey Chaucer to write the Canterbury Tales, which are known world wide. Canterbury also boasts a range of fortifications, including traces of the original Roman defences. Its primarily medieval walls, the impressive fourteenth century West Gate and the Norman Castle, newly open to visitors.

The picturesque streets of Canterbury, present one of the most cosmopolitan collections of restaurants and bars in England. The shopping facilities are excellent, ranging from markets and small specialist shops to large department stores.
