Come and stay at The Piggeries a medieval holiday cottage for two in the heart of Wells, a few feet from the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace gardens.

Here is something quite different! Part of an early medieval house which fell into disuse in the 17th Century, and was eventually used for keeping pigs, and now has been converted into holiday accommodation of great character.

Step back in time. The Piggeries are authentic, rustic and quirky - and in a unique situation. Sit on the patio and hear the choir and the organ in the Cathedral next door. In the garden are free range chickens. And there is a superb view in one direction of the East End of the Cathedral, literally a few feet away, and in the other direction of Tor Woods (National Trust). And above all it is so quiet, in the centre of England's smallest city.

The Accommodation

White-washed walls of rubble stone, old beams, and pantiled roof.
Behind a 10ft wall, close to the ancient springs.
Main living area 21ft (6.3m) by 8ft (2.4m), comprising at one end a well-equipped kitchen with gas cooker, microwave, fridge etc; the other end being comfortable with chairs, table, TV, radio and sofa-bed.
Bedroom, 8ft (2.4m) by 9ft (2.7m), with 4ft 6" (1.35m) double bed.
Bathroom with cast iron bath, hand-held shower, wash-basin and WC.
Gas central heating. Washing machine.
Broadband Internet access, wi-fi, at no extra charge.
Small south-facing patio area of the large adjoining garden, with chairs, table and sun umbrella.
Separate self-contained access via mediaeval stone doorway.
Own parking in the garden (invaluable in the centre of Wells!).
Welcome pack on arrival.

If you are looking for a standard luxury holiday break with designer wallpaper, fitted carpets and the latest shower cabinet, this will not be the place for you. The walls are traditionally whitewashed, there are old floor-boards and rugs, and the bathroom is simple, albeit spotlessly clean. And taller people need to beware of the low doorways! But step through this door in the wall, and you will not be disappointed.

Less than five minutes walk from the centre of the City, and shops and restaurants. Many lovely walks, without the need to use a car. Or you can hire a bicycle! Also an excellent centre for touring the Mendip Hills and a number of National Trust houses. And less than an hour from Bath, Bristol or Taunton or for those who can't resist the outlet centre of Clark's Village at Street.
