Holly Tree Cottage has been beautifully renovated. Built around 1790, it retains lots of character, with original beams and an inglenook containing a Suffolk log-burning stove. There is full central heating throughout, and hot water. Central heating, wood and electricity are included in the rental price.
The cottage is small but very comfortable and cosy and not at all cluttered; it has everything you need for a fantastic holiday. It is ideally positioned, adjacent to Westleton Common, but only about 200 yards from the shop, pubs, restaurant etc in the village.
The cottage sleeps 4, with a double bedroom, and a twin room (plus a sofa bed in the living room). Downstairs comprises a well-equipped sunny kitchen, with dishwasher, washer/drier, microwave, large fridge freezer, electric cooker with ceramic hob, butler’s sink etc. There is a morning/dining room for mealtimes, which opens on to the patio and garden. The cottage has a cosy sitting room with a television, a DVD player (with a small collection of DVDs), a CD/radio, books and games. There is a beautiful inglenook fireplace with a traditional log-burning stove. The spacious bathroom has a bath with shower over, shaving point, radiator and towel rail.
Upstairs are the two bedrooms, a double and a twin. Both are sunny rooms overlooking the garden and have fitted cupboards, carpets and a decent amount of storage. The beds are made up on your arrival, and towels are provided. Both bedrooms look out over the garden, which is large and opens on to the Common. It has apple trees and a patio area with seating, perfect for barbequeing on a fine evening (barbeque provided). The garden is very very peaceful, and safe. Parking is at the top of the garden, next to the heath. There is a lockable shed in the garden, should you wish to bring bicycles.
Westleton itself is a picture book village, with everything a village should have. There’s a village green, where the annual Barrel Fair takes place in August and open air film screenings; there’s a duck pond, a 14th century thatched roofed church, which regularly hosts classical music concerts, flower festivals etc.
Westleton has two pubs, the White Horse and The Crown, both of which serve food. There is an excellent general store cum post office in the village, a tea room for your cream teas, a garage and a well-known second-hand bookshop.
The area around the cottage is full of wildlife – you can lie in bed and listen to nightingales, owls and nightjars on the heath and hear the deer rutting in Autumn. Dartford warblers, stone curlews, bitterns, and marsh harriers are all present, along with deer, rabbits and reptiles. Nearby Minsmere reserve runs many guided birdwatching walks and family events throughout the year.
The whole area is full of beautiful walks and cycle rides, literally in all directions – across the Common and into Minsmere, home of the RSPB’s famous reserve; over Dunwich Heath to the sea at Dunwich, and through the reedbeds on to Walberswick (nice, safe beach); across the heath to the Coastguard cottages (National Trust); through the woods to Eastbridge and the Eels Foot Inn, with good food, live folk music, and if you dare walk back through the woods in the dark, glow worms to light your way!
There is so much to do in the area. The beaches of Dunwich, Aldeburgh, Dunwich Heath, Thorpeness, Walberswick and Southwold are all close by. Thorpeness has a very safe boating lake called The Meare, complete with little islands to explore. Walberswick has a lovely beach with sand dunes, and is the place to go crabbing - it hosts the annual British Crabbing Championship each August.
For those with children, there are loads of places to visit, from the amusement park at Pleasurewood Hills, farms, zoos, museums. At Framlingham and Orford there are fascinating castles to explore, while Sutton Hoo, the mysterious burial ground of Anglo-Saxon kings is definitely worth a visit. Snape Maltings is the place for art lovers - with concerts, exhibitions, festivals etc throughout the year.
