Newlyn is excellent as a base for visiting Falmouth, Minnack Theatre ( cliff location to watch shows and plays ), Eden Project, National Trust gardens, Newquay (surf beaches and Jamie Oliver's restaurant).
Cornwall is known for it's celebration days. 1st May is 'Obby Horse Day in Padstow, 8th May is Flora Day in Helston, and Golowan Festival in July in Penzance. August heralds Fish Festival in Newlyn and mid September brings St Ives Arts Festival. The famous Mousehole lights are switcthed on in mid December, with Tom Bawcocks Eve on the 23rd.
