The house sleeps four, with a double bedroom and a twin room. There is also a single sofa bed if an extra place is required.
There is a large living/kitchen area including an open fire with comfortable sofas around it, as well as a TV and DVD player. There is an Aga for cooking on (there is also a combination microwave/oven/grill), a large fridge/freezer and a dishwasher. There is also a washing machine.
The bathroom has a large roll top bath and toilet. There is also a separate second toilet.
The front garden has a lawn, bench and table from where you can enjoy good views, particularly of sunsets over the picturesque Brentor in the distance.
Pets are welcome by arrangement; it is a particularly suitable area for dog walkers, with direct access onto the moor and little in the way of motor traffic in the village.
It is possible to walk onto the moor from the house, it being only a short walk upstream to open moorland. Wonderful views are to be had from the tops of White Tor and Cox Tor which are within comfortable walking distance. There are also plenty of other walks in the area, in woods and along rivers, which we can suggest to visitors.
There is a cosy village pub serving good food, as well as other pubs in the area and in the local town of Tavistock. There are three supermarkets in the town, plus good local shops including a wonderful cheese shop, and a traditional delicatessen (Creber's) and an excellent farmer's market on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. There is also a Waitrose a twenty minute drive away in Okehampton.
It is about an hours drive to either the north or south coasts.

By Car from Exeter direction: Heading West on the A30, turn off at Sourton Down onto the A386 heading towards Tavistock. A few minutes drive past the village of Mary Tavy lookout for a left turn towards Peter Tavy at the bottom of the hill. Continue over a stone bridge and fork left and remain on the road until entering Peter Tavy village. Take the first turn on the right in the village, up a hill passing a village hall on the left. Southernwood is the last house on the left, there is parking either on the road or in the drive. By car from Tavistock: Head East out of Tavistock on the A386 signposted for Mary Tavy and Okehampton. A five minute drive out of the town will bring you to a sharp "S" bend, immediately after which, take a right hand turn signposted to Peter Tavy. (Continue from second paragraph above). The nearest Rail station is Plymouth: From Plymouth it is possible to take the 86 bus to Tavistock and then a taxi would be needed for the remainder of the journey.
