Seal Haven holiday cottage is situated in the picturesque township of Skinidin, in the north-west corner of the lovely Isle of Skye. Scotland's west highlands have been described as Europe's last unspoiled wilderness and Skinidin reflects this wild beauty.

The cottage is a typical Skye crofter's house nestling against the hill, with commanding views of Loch Dunvegan, the majestic Cuillin Mountains, and north across the Minch to the Isle of Harris.

Being on the loch-side, Seal Haven is ideally situated for sailing or kayaking. If you bring your own boat, there are easy launching places nearby and ample parking at the cottage for boat and cars.

Wild life abounds in the local area, from the seals on the shore, to otters and red deer which are frequently seen from the door of the cottage. Golden eagles, and its cousin the sea or white tailed eagle are also common visitors to Skinidin.

A short drive to Neist Point, the most westerly point of Skye, will provide many sightings of whale and basking sharks. Gavin Maxwell, of Ring of Bright Water fame, used to hunt for basking sharks round this area. In the sixties, basking sharks were a common sight in Skye but for whatever reason became much scarcer in the years between. It is good to see them return.

A few hundred metres from the cottage is the award winning Three Chimneys Restaurant, one of Scotland's premier eating venues. We are very fortunate in the number of high quality restaurants in the surrounding area and are particularly lucky that the Three Chimneys is so close. From exquisite lunches to an evening's dining to remember you are only a five or six minute stroll away at Seal Haven.

Should you wish to dine in, we can recommend where to purchase organic meats, including Skye venison and wild boar, or herbs and salads grown in the local area and all quite delicious. Our guest frequently buy lobster and prawns from boats which fish in front of the cottage. The cost is a fraction of what you may expect to pay for such delicacies. You can of course go fishing and add mackerel or perhaps even cod to your dinner table, and it doesn't come any fresher.

There are many formal visitor attractions near at hand. Dunvegan Castle and Gardens, where you can take a boat trip to visit the seal colony or, visit Skyeskins, a local tannery, where the by-product sheepskins are turned into high quality rugs and covers. This is a must see.

There is a very popular toy museum in Glendale, a short drive away, and many other craft shops where unique gifts may be purchased.

You can walk or cycle from Seal Haven and you can spend a week just exploring the local area without needing to use your car at all. We look forward to seeing you.

Guest Book

You will find Seal Haven in Skinidin, a township in the north-western part of Skye. Assuming you come from the Skye bridge, follow the A87 until you reach Sligachan. Go left, just over the bridge towards Dunvegan.

Follow this road until you reach Dunvegan. Just before you enter Dunvegan at Lonmore, turn left on the B884 towards Glendale. The B884 continues with a sharp right (left will take you to Orbost). Continue on this road until you pass the sign of Skinidin. Just as you are about to leave Skinidin and enter Colbost, you'll see Seal Haven on your left up the hill side. Go up the driveway, take the left entrance to 15 Skinidin and drive all the way up. Seal Haven is the cottage on the left.

If using GPS equipment, please note that the suggested route might take you via Mallaig instead of the Skye Bridge. The Mallaig - Armadale ferry crossing is only at set times, is normally bookable and the winter service is infrequent to none. Please check the Caledonian MacBrayne website for details.
