Situated in the beautiful village of Garrigill in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the Pennine Way and C2C Cycle Route, The Old Smythy is an ideal base for walkers, cyclists or anyone who wants to get away from it all. The house is situated literally on the village green and is regularly photographed by visitors.

Unit 1 Sleeps 2
The house is split into 2 self contained units. The ground floor has 1 bedroom with shower and lounge/kitchen with oven, micro-wave, washing machine etc. Leading off this room is a toilet and area to store bikes etc.
There is a wood burning stove which can burn both wood and coal.
Satellite television.

Unit 2 Sleeps 6
The first floor is accessed via the external stone staircase which opens into the lounge/kitchen. The kitchen has oven, micro-wave, washer/dryer etc. Off this room is a double bedroom and bathroom equipped with bath/shower, toilet and hand basin.
Stairs leading from the lounge take you into the second floor which has 1 double bedroom and 1 bedroom with 2 single beds.
There is an open fire in the lounge along with satellite television.

The views from 3 sides are spectacular and access to a wide area is easy due to the central location.
Newcastle to the east, the lakes to the west, the Tees and Wear valley to the south and Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall to the north can all be reached within an hour.

There is an indoor swimming pool in the village at St. Johns House which can be hired. Prices are only £15 per hour for the pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. Please note that there is a maximum party size of 8 people per session, allowed in the pool. The pool is next to the pub which is only a few metres from the Old Smythy.

Directions

From Penrith:
Drive 22 mins east along the A686, at Alston follow the B6277 4 miles to Garrigill.In 2001 this route was nominated one of the top ten most scenic drives in the world.

From Carlisle:
45 mins south east of Carlisle, towards Brampton (Jct 44 M6 on A689), at Brampton turn right towards Alston (A689), then follow to Garrigill (B6277).

From the South:
60 mins north of Scotch Corner, follow to Barnard Castle (A66), at Barnard Castle turn off towards Middleton-in-Teesdale (B6277), drive through the beautiful Tees Valley towards Alston. Before Alston turn off at Garrigill.

From the East:
50 mins south west of Hexham, follow towards Carlisle (A69), turn left just before Haydon Bridge towards Alston (A686 past Langley Castle). At Alston follow to Garrigill (B6277).
