The Rovie Estate Cottages are in Sutherland, a name that evokes all that is best in the Scottish Highlands. The Estate has five stone-built traditional cottages just halfway between the sandy coast and famous Golf Links of Dornoch on the A9 and the small town of Lairg on Loch Shin. From Lairg it is easy to visit the extreme north-west headland of Scotland at Cape Wrath (plus Lochniver and Ullapool) and the A9 gives access to John O' Groats on the extreme north-east, allowing day-trips to Orkney.
For those who want to fish, the Estate has three hill lochs with indigenous brown trout and four miles of private salmon-fishing on the River Fleet (spate river) available by prior arrangement. There are miles of wonderful walking amongst many varieties of rare flora and fauna recognised and protected by The Nature Conservancy as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, while for the historian there are the remains of a Celtic settlement nearby. Ambitious young Klondikers can try panning for gold at Kildonan, there is an indoor swimming-pool at Golspie and the Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain invites you to taste the local brew.
All of the cottages are modernised, high standard and very comfortable and all have the use of two laundry rooms with coin-operated washing-machines, tumble-driers and Pay-phones. Heating in most of the cottages is by open-fire and electric-heaters, with one night-store heater in the hall. Bed-linen and towels are available for hire. Pets are welcome.
Keeper's Cottage stands detached, back from the Rogart road, facing south across its large walled (enclosed) grass garden and the valley of the River Fleet to the hills beyond. The Garden Cottage faces onto its own (enclosed) pretty front garden and stands against the beautiful walled garden of Rovie Lodge. Stables Cottage has its own enclosed patio and garden at its rear and faces onto a courtyard, side-on to the rear of Keeper's Cottage. (Please note that this is the one cottage that does not have an open-fire).
Two more cottages, Jocks and Burnside, semi-detached from each other, stand on their own in the country just over a mile further west. They have enclosed grass gardens in front and are one field back from the road. They have open views over the surrounding countryside, and there is a rocky burn at the side which is a wonderful playground for children EXCEPT when it is in spate. (When it is, in Season, salmon can usually be seen battling against the spate over the rocks).
