The Eilanreach Estate is a most romantic West Highland Estate of rock and grass-covered mountains rising to 3,000ft., tumbling streams, woodlands. a spectacular waterfall, and a rugged shore stretching 10 miles along mainland Scotland's incomparable West Coast. It borders on the shores of The Sound of Sleat, facing westwards across 3 miles of sea towards the dramatic peaks of The Cuilin Mountains on the Island of Skye, and southwards to the Islands of Eigg, Rhum and Muck, and is about 20 miles south of the Kyle of Lochalsh.
Three of the Estate cottages at Eilanreach are in a little gathering of houses about a quarter of a mile from the shore of The Sound of Sleat, not far from the rocky pools of the river; while one (Tormore) is 3 miles further down the coast above Sandaig Bay and more isolated. They have all been redecorated and refurbished by caring owners who have installed good modern kitchens, and the houses are cosy at all times of the year. There is a coin-operated automatic washing machine, tumble drier and a deep freeze for tenants' use.
Tormore Cottage is on its own about 4 miles south of the other cottages, just off the single-track road leading down to Arnisdale. Sheltered by rolling masses of hills, it stands about 400 ft above Sandaig Bay and its islets, facing pinewoods, and it was home of Morag MacKinnon who (see 'Ring of Bright Water') cared for the migrating wild swans who every winter rested on the reedy hill-side lochan at the side of the cottage. Stone built, and clad with corrugated iron to protect it from westerly gales which can rage in from the Atlantic in winter, it makes an ideal holiday home for those who truly enjoy a solitary location only disturbed by the abundant wildlife and the occasional passer-by. Heating is by electricity and open-fire (supply of coal included).
Keepers Cottage is a substantial, detached stone house standing in its own safe grass garden, looking out across woods and farmlands to the Island of Skye. South and North Cottages are the two oldest and quaintest of all the cottages on the Estate. They have been extensively redesigned and renovated internally and are now very sought after as holiday houses.
