Get set for a feast of knowledge this month as the
latest BritainUpdate newsletter from AboutBritain.com
celebrates all things true to the heart of 'Renaissance
Man' - Science, Art, Culture & philosophy.
It's difficult to not have noticed Dan Brown's Best Seller,
'The Da Vinci Code' over the past few months. From press
columns to radio shows and TV personalities, it seems
everyone's been offering their take on ideas of the
Illimunati.
'Renaissance Man' was not only fascinated by science but
also art, philosophy and culture. They were all facets of
their various paths to illumination. So, as a tribute to
Da Vinci, and the others of his ilk, we're celebrating the
great art, culture and science to be found in and around
Britain this month.
Before we start down the path to illumination, as we live
in a time of equality let's exercise our own creativity
and rename 'Renaissance Man' 'Renaisseur' for the rest of
this article. That done, in order to be a complete Renaisseur
you're going to need your fill of culture, arts, philosophy
and science. Luckily, you're spoilt for choice on all counts.
On top of our vibrant arts and cultural scenes, National
Science Week takes place (somewhat incongruously) for the 10
days from 11th March – 20th March with events and exhibitions
for all tastes and ages on offer across the country.
Glasgow and Edinburgh
Starting in the North, we find both Glasgow and Edinburgh
offering a diverse range of events and attractions.
Glasgow's always been a strong contributor to
the British cultural scene, particularly in terms of music
and entertainment in recent times. True to that reputation,
the Glasgow International Comedy Festival 2005 is taking
place between the 10th to 26th of March at various venues
across the city. This should provide ample opportunity for
observation of both culture and philosophy amidst the
laughter.
For a more serene cultural experience, why not
take a trip to the award-winning Burrell
Collection, or
indeed to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed Glasgow
School of Art? To complete the renaissance itinerary,
Glasgow Science Centre is making
its own contribution
to National Science Week with the special event 'Hold
Your Breath – How to Dig a Tunnel Under the Clyde'.
Heading East we soon arrive in Edinburgh
and here too there
is plenty to feed the keen renaissance mind. From Dynamic
Earth to the National Gallery
of Scotland, Scotland's Capitol offers a huge range of
opportunity for our renaisseur quest. For a more off-the-wall
experience, why not try out Edinburgh Zoo's
contribution to
National Science Week - 'Chimp Talk' - where you can
experience first hand their latest research into chimpanzee
communication. Alternatively, the Royal
Museum is hosting
'The Science of Colour and Optics', an event which looks at
all facets of the manipulation and interpretation of light.
Scientifically satiated, why not head to the
Edinburgh City Arts Centre where
you'll find a fascinating exhibition
'Edvard Grieg - Art and Identity'? This explores the composer's
life and music.
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Moving South, Newcastle is a
hive of renaisseur activity this
month. In addition to the Laing Art
Gallery's temporary and
permanent exhibitions, they also have a Science Week event
run by students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Hatton Gallery is also featuring students' work throughout
March, namely the MA Gallery Studies Students' Exhibition.
There are a number of events on offer at the cutting edge
Centre For Life. The A-mazing Sea event at
the Life Science
Centre explores the world of sea creatures in conjunction
with none other than Spongebob Squarepants and his '3D
motion ride'. Meanwhile, the Informatics Research Institute
offers a fascinating exploration into how close we're coming
to creating a virtual human.
Special events aside, Newcastle has lots to offer the in
terms of art, culture, commerce and science. Antony Gormley's
Angel of the North is a striking feat
of art and engineering
and well worth a visit. Gateshead is also home to The
Shipley Art Gallery, another fine
opportunity to indulge in
local art and culture. Once done, there's great shopping on
hand, and an energetic social scene in which to unwind and
digest your renaisseur findings.
The Midlands
Birmingham boasts an enviable mix of
world-class culture,
art, science and industry to feed the most demanding of
renaisseur minds. Indeed, Birmingham's Soho House was
meeting place to Britain's own illuminati in times gone by
– The Lunar Society was an organisation of scientists and
thinkers who counted Charles Darwin's own grandfather
amongst their number. Today, you can partake of glorious
music courtesy of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, or
study some of the greatest European works of art at the
Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
The Ikon Gallery is another
must see for great European works of art, including an
exhibition this month of renowned Italian artist Giovanni.
Heading towards the West Country, Explore-At-Bristol offers
its own Science Week events this month with two exciting
offerings – 'Know Your Mind' presented in association with
the Bristol Neuroscience Group and the
University of Bristol
and 'The Really Brainy Show' which has fun while exploring
how your brain really makes sense of the outside world. In
addition, The Bristol City Museum and Art
Gallery is well
worth a visit for a first rate collection of artworks and
historical pieces, all set in a striking and impressive
Edwardian Baroque building.
South East
If concepts of space and space travel especially pique your
curiosity, then you may find yourself heading South East towards
Oxford and London. Oxford's Museum of the History of
Science
is presenting a Cassini-Huygens Exhibition this month, again
as part of National Science week. It details the
Cassini-Huygens mission to Titan and explores its relevance
in both modern and historical terms.
Meanwhile, at the Royal Observatory,
Greenwich, you can find
out about Arthur Stanley Eddington, a former Royal
Observatory astronomer who helped provide evidence for
Einstein's Theory of Relativity. This is another National
Science Week event and runs from the 11th to the 20th March.
Greenwich aside, boasting over 90 art galleries, dozens of
top theatres and performance venues along side world-famous
museums and collections, London is great destination for
finding the creative stimuli and social commentary you seek
on your quest for enlightenment. Such is the breadth of
offering that we can only touch on a handful below.
Running just until the 12th, "Spit-Lit" is an interesting
event being held at various venues across Spittalfields,
London. It looks at all aspects of women's writing with
impressive array of leading female writers and performers
taking part. Continuing the literary theme, the London
Book Fair is on at Olympia from the 14th to the 16th.
This is presented as the national event for those in, or
interested in, British writing and publishing.
If you're looking for a more regal slice of culture, then
The Royal Collection at Buckingham
Palace is well worth a
visit this month with both 'Treasures from the Royal
Collection' and 'Canaletto in Venice' being special
exhibits on offer.
With a wealth of fascinating permanent exhibits,
attractions, theatres, galleries and creativity the
length and breadth of the country, a rewarding and
enjoyable break is on your doorstep at any time of the
year. We invite you to celebrate Britain's unique blend
of art, science and culture this month by planning your
own journey of British illumination today.
