Discovering The Real Manchester
|
Manchester, an International City
Manchester is easy to access from anywhere, with flights arriving at Manchester International
Airport from over 100 destinations world wide. Manchester
is a multi cultural city, with three Universities and one
of the largest student populations in the country, making
it a lively place with a great social scene.
Festive Manchester
Why not do your Christmas shopping in Manchester? The city
has been in festive mode since 12th November when none other
than Shrek appeared to switch on the 2004 Christmas lights.
That was in Albert Square, home of the ever-popular European
Market. In St Ann's Square at the German Market, you will
find Bratwurst, Gluwein and other traditional German goods.
Manchester Town Hall (worth visiting to see the Ford Madox
Brown murals), takes part in the festive season by presenting
the 'Dazzle' exhibition once more. This is a stunning range of
designer Jewellery which is also available for sale.
Manchester Heritage
Find out about the history of Manchester and its people
at the People's History
Museum, where displays
and reconstructions vividly recreate day to day lives at
home, work and leisure. Urbis, a dramatic glass building
rising high above the city, is home to a new museum with
interactive exhibits. It's well worth a visit. The
spectacular new Imperial War Museum
North opened in
July 2002 in Trafford Park. The special exhibition, 'The Greater Game: Sport, War and Peace' is on show here until 9th January 2005.
Cultural Manchester
Art lovers should definitely visit Manchester Art
Gallery for a great range of exhibitions from art and costume to sculpture and design.
The Whitworth Art Gallery is famous
for its collections
of art and design, and the largest collections of textiles
and wallpapers outside London.
Manchester is well catered for musically, being home to the BBC Philharmonic, the Halle
and the Manchester Camerato orchestras.
Sporting Manchester
Manchester boasts two world famous football clubs,
Manchester United and Manchester City. For fans visiting
during the football season, this could be a great opportunity
to see their team at a home game, fixtures allowing.
The city is well known for its love of sport and has
provided superb sports venues and facilities at the
Sportcity complex in East Manchester.
Manchester offers some of the best hotels, restaurants,
and attractions in Britain, so whether your visit is
for business or pleasure, you're sure to find it a
great experience.
