 Introduction

In the third Britain Update from AboutBritain.com we introduce you to Scotland's second (and largest) city, Glasgow. Situated on the River Clyde on the west coast of Scotland, once famous as a great ship-building and industrial centre, today Glasgow is a "European City of Culture". An interesting place for a city break, whether you like to shop, sight-see, visit art galleries and museums or enjoy the theatre, you will find plenty going on in Glasgow.

Enjoy a City Break in Glasgow

Photo of GlasgowGlasgow is the birthplace of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the creators of the Art Nouveau style. There is evidence of his work in many buildings in the city, such as the Glasgow School of Art and The Lighthouse, Glasgow's Centre for Architecture Design and the City. You can even enjoy tea in the Willow Tea Rooms, designed by Mackintosh in 1904.

There are many other styles of architecture in Glasgow, Hutcheson's Hall, one of the most elegant buildings in the city centre is well worth visiting. Or in complete contrast Tenement House, a first floor flat presenting a picture of domestic life in the early 20th century.

With over 20 museums and art galleries in Glasgow, there is a vast choice for visitors to explore. One of the finest is the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park, housed in a unique building especially designed for the collection. Nearby in the park is Pollok House, one of Scotland's finest Edwardian homes - a wonderful combination for a day out. Interior Photo of Tenement House

Many events and festivals are held in Glasgow; art lovers will have the chance to enjoy the Whistler Centenary this year. Glasgow is home to one of the finest collections of Whistler's work.

Here is a small selection of entertainment on offer in Glasgow this autumn: At Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, an International Classical Season with programmes such as a Strauss Series, Caledonian Fiddle Orchestra and Mozart by Candlelight.

The Citizens Theatre present plays such as Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades", and at The Kings Theatre, musicals "Pink Champagne" (7th - 11th Oct) and "Stomp" (28th Oct - 1st Nov).

From 10th - 19th October you can visit the Ideal Home Show at the SECC, a Festival of Music at various venues from 23rd - 30th October, and a French Film Festival from 14th - 27th November.

Glasgow has excellent shopping facilities - second only to London! Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street are devoted to retail. There are also several attractive shopping centres and malls, where you can "shop till you drop". Whether you are looking for a quick snack between shopping and sightseeing, or a gastronomic evening meal, you will be spoiled for choice in Glasgow. Photo of Glasgow
