The Great West Gate which forms part of the property (now called Browne's Gate) is designated an ancient monument.During the reign of Edward VI (1547 - 1553), the hotel was an armed keep, and after a period of confiscation it was handed back to the Church by Mary Tudor (1553 - 1558).
