Ruskin's home, Brantwood, lies just across the lake and many of his visitors (including Charles Darwin) would stay as guests at the Waterhead.

During the Second World War, the hotel became a school for evacuees - Sir Robin Day being amongst its pupils.

For conferences, the hotel can host a minimum number of 4 delegates and a maximum of 20.
